About the Partnership
University of Utah students, employees, and visitors now have an affordable and sustainable transportation choice to access the University and surrounding destinations. SPIN and the University have developed a first-of-its kind strategic partnership, anchored by a comprehensive shared mobility program to support student research, drive revenue, and enhance transportation safety on campus.
Beginning Fall 2022, SPIN e-scooters and bikes will be found in various locations throughout campus. Riders must download the Spin app available on the App Store and Google Play to unlock the scooters. The cost for renting a SPIN device is $1 to unlock, plus $0.23 per minute.
Parking rules for scooters and e-bikes on campus are different than in the city. On campus, you’ll be required to park in a designated parking area, which are marked as white boxes on the pavement, and are visible in the SPIN mobile app.
Always ride and park responsibly. That means always yielding to pedestrians, riding predictably and safely on roadways, and wearing a helmet!

The University has publicly committed to achieving climate neutrality. Transportation emissions are a substantial part of the University’s carbon impact. Therefore, having a partnership with a shared mobility provider like SPIN supports the University's commitment to achieving climate neutrality.
Research proves that shared mobility is an important and increasingly popular part of the transportation system. Some impacts of shared mobility include increased transportation accessibility, reduced driving, and decreased personal vehicle ownership — all of which reduce vehicle emissions that harm our air quality.
First, download the SPIN app available on the App Store and Google Play. Once downloaded, follow the prompted steps to register and set up your payment information. To start your ride, locate an available scooter by looking at the map within the SPIN app. Once you've located the scooter, tap the orange "scan" button, and follow the on-screen prompts guiding you through scanning the QR code on the handlebars. When the scooter is unlocked, it will need an initial kick-start to gain momentum before hitting the throttle. Without momentum, the throttle will not work.
It costs $1 to unlock plus $0.23 per minute. SPIN will provide ride credits to every University student and employee to incentivize your first trip!
SPIN riders must adhere to safety regulations outlined in the University Policy 3-232 and the SPIN terms and conditions. Additionally, riders must yield to pedestrians, obey the roadway rules, and adhere to traffic signs and signals. Helmet use is strongly encouraged.
The SPIN app displays every designated parking area on the University campus. You must park a SPIN e-scooter or e-bike at these outdoor parking areas or you will continue to be charged for your ride. SPIN e-scooters and e-bikes are never allowed to be ridden or parked in any University building.
If you live on campus, Housing and Residential education have resident policies and responsibilities that designate parking rules for your personal mobility devices.
SPIN customers in violation of safety and parking rules are subject to fines. If repeated violations occur, ride privileges are revoked.
SPIN shared e-scooters and e-bikes are licensed to operate in Salt Lake City, allowing you to ride to and from campus. The SPIN app displays all riding rules and parking areas for the larger Salt Lake City area. The app will tell you where you can park your device wherever you end your trip.
Per University Policy 3-232 the speed limit on campus sidewalks is 10 mph. Most streets surrounding the campus have speed limits between 20-35 mph, where the scooters will have a top speed of 15 mph and the e-bikes a top speed of 20 mph. The SPIN fleet is geofenced to adhere to lower speed limits on campus sidewalks.
